I remember something that Henry Rollins said
This was back in the early 80s and Henry Rollins was just starting his career in the spoken word. I saw him a few times when he was the lead singer for Black Flag and we actually skated together with another band called JFA (Jodi Foster's Army... remember Hinckley?) Anyway... that means that during college I was a full fledged punk rocker. Nobody, but nobody would guess today..
I smile when I see kids today dressed like punk rockers, it wasn't a wardrobe back then. I wasn't all that strange, but I did have buzz cut (now very common, not in the early 80s when feather hair and perms were still popular) and I wore high top converse or vans, I skated in empty pools and I have a pin in my foot to prove it. I worked in a skate shop and blasted alternative music out into the street in front of the Arizona State University Campus. People rolled their eyes and laughed at me when I had a normal haircut in the front and a mohawk in the back. Strange days.
Well, Henry said.. "No matter who you are, we all are the same when we go to 7/11" profound :) he worked at a 7/11 as a clerk at the time. I remembered that today because I saw a H2 at a 7/11, it looked like it was completely custom.. right next to a beat up old 73 VW squareback...and it reminded me of that time.. that saying... and how things have changed.
I woke up in the middle of the night last night.. my dream haunts me today.. my boys were teenagers and disinterested in visiting. They didn't want to come over and watch cartoons and have fun with their toys.. they didn't want to play GI joes or work on their train set.. they didn't want to be there at all.. they just sat and didn't talk to me or even look at me.. they had this disdain for me.. they didn't want to be with me.. because they had other things to do. I couldn't get that thought and still can't get it out of my mind. They are growing up so fast... only 8 and 10 now.. but time flies.. it really really does.
Not long ago, I was a skinny punk rocker..
