Something different...

Enough about me :)...

This week, is a short 4 day week thanks to MLK day here. There are so many people calling in sick this week. Taking the whole week off. Why? Because the weather here is beautiful? Because it is,, sorry but it will be in the mid 70s today. No, it's because of the most attended sporting event in the United States. More than 500,000 people will attend the Phoenix Open in the next few days. What is the Phoenix Open? Well if you don't follow golf, it wouldn't matter if you lived in Phoenix. It's not about golf, it's about the biggest party in town. Forget the Super Bowl... 5 times as many people will be going to the Open. There is a party every night in the Bird's Nest... a big tent filled with beautiful people. Unlike golf tournaments where the fans are reserved and quiet... here the fans cheer wildly. I won't forget when Tiger sunk a hole in one on the 16th hole and how the crowd reacted, Tiger.. raising the roof. It's really a lot of fun. I won't be going, because to be honest.. I just don't have a free ticket this year. I don't think anyone really pays to go to the open.. it's a corporate event and when I was a big wig in the corporate world I would have free tickets to VIP tents and the like. Not now.. so I will have to just enjoy the weather another way.. besides walking around and milling around a golf course with hundreds of thousands.

I do have a fun story about the Phoenix Open. A few years back.. when I was very single and looking to meet someone.. I thought it may be fun to go to the Phoenix Open.. for the first time. My friend suggested that it was really just one big singles market.. people meet people at the Open. So, I gave it a try... I started walking around and didn't have a clue as to what was going on. I stood by this one fairway.. I think it was the 17th... and watched people go by. Then two girls that were pretty attractive came up and stood right by me.. I looked over and they smiled. So I thought.. I'll start up some conversation... I said "So, what should I be watching here?" One girl rolled her eyes and the other one pointed... there was a golf ball headed my way and landing in the middle of the golf course... I felt like a geek as they walked away.. So, I got out my cell phone and called my friend.. and asked him.. "What am I supposed to be doing here? " he said, "You are not on your cell phone are you? They are prohibited at the Open" oops.... so I just decided to watch people instead.. if I was going to meet someone, she was going to have to come up to me... or spill something on me to get noticed. I enjoyed the day in the sun, but I don't think I would pay to go back.

So... if you are somewhere where it is cold today.. and a lot of you are.. watch the Phoenix Open to warm up... people will be drinking beer and wearing shorts and polo shirts.
